Arnold qualified on the USS Hackleback (SS-295) in 1943 and was a YN3(SS) when he left the Navy. Arnold Raymond Baldwin, 86, of Sevierville, Tenn., formerly of Grand Island, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, in Sevierville, TN. Mr. Baldwin was born March 30, 1924, in Dannebrog to Frank and Fredericka (Petersen) Baldwin. Arnold entered the Dannebrog school system knowing only Danish and graduated from high school in 1941. He volunteered into the U.S. Submarine Service in January of 1943 and was honorably discharged in October of 1944. He met his wife-to-be, Barbara Workman, at a dance in the Glovers Ballroom. They were married July 31, 1949. He served the City of Grand Island as the first Harley Davidson motorcycle police officer, served as a Deputy Sheriff, as a guard at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant, and retired from the City Library. He was a loving, kind, considerate man, sharing his handyman talents and vast knowledge with family and friends. His hobbies included motorcycles, building a barn, playhouse, and a garage, and being a devoted husband and father. He was a member of the Platt-Duetsche Society, American Legion, VFW, FOE, Nebraska Chapter of the U.S. Submarine Veterans, and the Smokey Mountain U.S. SubVets. Arnold was welcomed into heaven by his beloved wife, Barbara; his parents; brother, Ralph; sister, Myrtle Petersen; nephew, David Petersen; brother, Martin; grandson, Scott Heydon; and great-granddaughter, Katelyn Curry. Survivors of the immediate family include two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Lyle Heydon of Bladen and Claire and Doug Steiger of Sevierville; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren
